New HIV/AIDS Learning Conversations Help Poor Women in India Safeguard Their Health

Freedom from Hunger has completed a new series of "Learning Conversations" (LCs) to respond to the growing HIV/AIDS epidemic in India. The LC methodology meets the needs of self-help groups of women in rural areas - most of whom cannot read or write - providing them with information and encouragement to fight infection, get tested, seek treatment and help those already afflicted. Facilitated by a field agent, these focused discussions build women's problem-solving skills, encourage community action and provide visual aids that the women can take home and keep to remind them of important information. The HIV/AIDS LC series was funded by GlaxoSmithKline's Positive Action program and will begin delivery in spring 2007 in the states of Jharkhand, Bihar and Orissa.
