Three-day Conference Advances Consumer Protection for Very Poor Borrowers

With the exponential growth of financial products and services targeting the poor, principled microenterprise development practitioners have raised awareness about the need to protect consumers from unscrupulous lending practices. Freedom from Hunger established its leadership role in the consumer protection movement three years ago as it led the development of comprehensive principles for microfinance institutions to use as they develop and deliver financial products to their clients. On October 10-12, 2006, Beth Porter, Freedom from Hunger's Vice President for Program Services; Kate McKee, CGAP Senior Advisor on Policy, Poverty Outreach and Aid Effectiveness; and David Baguma, Executive Director of Association of Microfinance Institutions of Uganda, will lead discussions to determine the prominence of consumers' rights among microenterprise development practitioners and to share ideas on how to bring pro-client principles into ongoing operations. Findings from this workshop will be presented at a session of SEEP's Annual General Meeting later this month during a panel presentation moderated by Beth Porter.
